Seed suppliers

Organic seeds

The following seed suppliers are my go-to guys for regionally adapted, open pollinated seeds.

  • Adaptive Seeds (http://www.adaptiveseeds.com/) is a regional source for artisan quality, public domain, open-pollinated seeds, grown without the use of synthetic chemicals and with ecologically mindful methods. Adaptive provides seeds from The Seed Ambassadors Project, mentioned below.
  • Uprising Organics (http://www.uprisingorganics.com), the first organic seed company certified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, provides regionally grown, open-pollinated seeds.
  • Krista Rome's Backyard Beans and Grains Project (http://www.backyardbeansandgrains.com/index.html), offers varieties of dry legumes, grains, and seed crops that may grow well in the Pacific Northwest. Krista tests their suitability for the small-scale grower. BBGP encourages adding locally-grown staple foods into the diet.
  • Nichols Garden Nursery (https://www.nicholsgardennursery.com/store/index.php), is a family business, involving two generations, that's been in business since 1950 in Oregon's famous Willamette Valley. Nichols regularly offers significant discounts on their organic seeds for those on its mailing list.
  • Wild Garden Seeds (http://wildgardenseeds.com), for farm-original varieties of many salad greens, vegetables, herbs and a few flowers organically grown by Shoulder to Shoulder Farm in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Said to be organically bred to be organically grown.
  • Carol Deppe's website, (http://www.caroldeppe.com) contains a link to the latest offerings this famous seed breeder's own seeds which she has adapted to the maritime climate. Carol offers her seeds beginning in the Spring and ending when she sells out. Adaptive Seeds, Uprising Organics and Backyard Beans and Grains also offer some of Carol's seeds.
  • Territorial Seed Company (http://www.territorialseed.com) has a huge selection of seeds, plants and supplies. When I can't find it at one of my above favorites, most likely I can get it at Territorial.

Other Resources

  • Organic Seed Alliance (http://seedalliance.org)| is based in Port Townsend and supports innovation in plant breeding, and increased availability, quality, and integrity of organic seeds.
